This is a pedestrian tunnel the provides a shortcut through a ridge running through the center of Stockholm. Called the Brunkeber Tunnel, its sides are sunny yellow corrugated metal and its ceiling is highly polished metal reflecting the lights shining on it. It provides a dramatic view of a silhouetted person walking toward the vanishing point.
Brunkebergs tunnel is a 231 meters long shortcut for cyclists and pedestrians through a ridge in the city center. It is located between David Bagares gata and Tunnelgatan and turned out to be a difficult task for the engineers back in 1884. Two years later it was ready to welcome the Stockholmers. A classic Instagram spot in Stockholm.
Pedestrians and cyclists can take a short cut through the Brunkeberg tunnel and thus avoid a few hilly streets. The tunnel is about 20 meters below Regeringsgatan. King Oscar II officially opened the tunnel in 1886. The tunnel has a length of 231 meters, is 4 meters wide and just under 4 meters high. The tunnel now has free access but in the beginning it was paying. Whoever wanted to cross the tunnel had to pay 2 ore.
Brunkeberg Tunnel must be one of the most photographed and yet most secret places in Stockholm. The tunnel is open every day between 7 am and 10 pm.
